days, I could simply watch the system boot. Any hickup would be noticed
easily and the cause could be investigated. Today, karmic covers
everything with a boot splash, things go wrong underneath badly but we
pretend everything

Run it, get rid of the boot splash and make sure to activate "show text
during boot".

two keys another meaning the completely sufficien Xmodmap does not work

Finally I got so fed up with gnome that I switched to XFCE and never
looked back. Despite all the other benefits I personally think it has,
.Xmodmap works as expected again, in particular also when waking up from
sleep.

tutorial to change keyboard settings. My hunch is that changing xkb is a
developer's job, while .Xmodmap is just great to change these one or two
odd keys on the keyboard.

we want to be able to tweak one or the other key on our keyboard,
because they are not able to build a working UI on top of xmodmap. At

its own). And I noticed that even xrandr just crashed on, what I think,
where completely sane inputs with a floating point exception. And I did

Tried the approach of thw-th (comment #46) and it kind of works. This is
an 8 year old Lenovo T500 laptop and I had to enter 6 seconds delay
before it started to work. A downside is that my selected desktop
background image is not set, or rather removed that way: it is set at
some time first, then

must be listed first in monitors.xml and gets x,y=0,0 assigned, while
the other monitor is then relative to this one.

just started later:

working monitors.xml to /etc/gnome-settings-daemon/xrandr. If Windows
drag ghost pictures, gnome-settings-daemon was still started to early.

Correction to comment #12. Thinkpad T500 does not consistenly boot ok
after "sudo update-initramfs -u". Like others reported, sometimes it
works sometimes not.

Strange observation. I tried this now several times: if I keep moving
the mouse while booting, it works (4 tries). If I leave the machine
alone, I get a black screen (2 tries) on my Lenovo T500. May still be
just luck.

Probably not really needed, but I can confirm this the same problem (upgrade
from Kubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, /proc/acpi/thermal_zone is missing, fan spins at
high speed, and CPU still gets throttled
(/sys/devices/system/cpu0/thermal_throttle/core_throttle_count shows not 0) due
to overheating).

was throttled due to overheating.
I use it a lot to set frequencies and verify it this way. And when the machine
gets hot, I can quickly see if the CPUs were throttled.
