Till, sorry for the confusing message. I did compile as you described above and it works for me, not breaking anything as far as I can see.
% dpkg -s ghostscript|grep -i version Version: 8.61.dfsg.1~svn8187-0ubuntu3.3 The only thing I find a bit strange: % gs GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.61 (2007-08-02) It still says pre-release, but maybe I misinterpreted some comments noting that this indicates a wrong version.
