regularly. In my case, the computer freezes and I have to hard-restart

A variant of trinkity's solution finally worked for me:
I deleted LD_LIBRARY_PATH.conf file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d
and then executed the command $ sudo ldconfig
This worked, and VMware Player still seems to work as well.

I am getting this bug with nvidia-173 also. No drivers show up in the
"Additional Drivers" app, and I get the same error message from this bug if I
try to install the driver package using apt or software center.

keep trying to launch a web browser. Finally invoked it in a way that
led to a reasonable looking info file (attached) and a crash in one of
the Python scripts.

If you go into System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Windows and
bind anything to the F1 key, that key will still bring up the help
window. If you log out of your session and log in to a 2-D session the
rebinding of F1 will work.

It also fixes the behavior of the "Maximize Window Vertically"
operation. With 3-D it maximizes, but repeating does not restore the
original size. With 2-D the operation toggles, which is arguably a
better behavior.
By the way, by "logging in with the 2-D session" I mean logging out,
then before
Logging out and logging in with the 2-D session fixes this.

This is only a very partial work-around though, only applicable to video, an
The ubuntu-desktop, gnome-power-manager, and update-notifier packages
are all dependent on notify-osd. Should this fact be filed as a separate
bug?
