This seems like the same problem I had. I was installing "Ubuntu
restricted extras" through "Ubuntu Software Center", and the installer
stopped progressing at 54%, with zero indication as to what was going
on. I ran "ps -A" and noticed there was a "preinst" process holding up

I get this too when I install something while copying files over the
network with rsync, to a raid which was on different drives than the
root partition. dpkg freezes at the unpacking step for many minutes,
even though the file copying is happening on different drives. dpkg

files tree?

What is the source of this file? I've tried it on Openshot 1.4.2 and it
doesn't eat all the memory, it gets imported as a zero length file.
MLT (melt) shows the message "[matroska @ 0x8620be0]Estimating duration
from bitrate, this may be inaccurate".
FFMpeg shows:
[matroska @ 0x91680e0]Unknown e
Is this with version 0.7.4 of MLT? Can you try with 0.7.6, available
when you add this PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release

OpenShot is developed for GTK. If Unity doesn't function properly with
it, it is a bug in Unity.
Maybe Canonical can contribute some development time to upstream
projects if they expect applications to work properly with their custom
interfaces.
