I made bz2 files.
dpkg.bz2 is less than 6 MBs but apt.bz2 is like 21 MBs. And from
the last post I think they are not necessary anymore, right?
So let's suppose it's a repo synchronization issue why does
apt explode anyway? Shouldn't apt handle the problem (once detected)
gracefully?
I was able to "bypass" the problem... but I had to delete both
pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin in order to be able to update (and
etc.) successfully.

Well that's a bit of adding insult to injury. I "know" how to
start my box without X without having to disable kdm. Also I said
before that I was running X without xorg.conf, with an xorg.conf
created by Xorg --config, with the old xorg.conf (from intrepid)

Right on! It _does_ work with intrepid's kernel.
Now X is running with no xorg.conf and it's _nice_. I had to change
menu.lst so that it uses the "saved" kernel as the default... but I
can live with that.

As a workaround, you can get a working environment with vesa.
First, blacklist i915. That's done adding a line saying:
blacklist i915 to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

libcurl4-gnutls, amarok is up and working again over here.

I was testing the 2.6.31-10 kernel (just upgraded the box). The
'parkinson's desease' problem from boot up is gone. After I removed the
the i915 from the blacklist, I got a stable screen on boot up.
However, when I removed the xorg.conf (that I use to stick with vesa) I

Well, I think we are not through with the problems with 865. More often
than not when the box is booting, X won't start and I won't get access
to the VTs when that happens. I can shut it down gracefully by pressing
power button or by using alt-sysRq keys. From another box through SSH I
get to see t

when the box is booting I get to a black screen with nothing at all on
it. No kdm, no mouse pointer, no keyboard input (not even the leds),
