I'm going to remove that dialog and use update-notifier instead. The
reboot is not really necessary to activate the changes, but restarting

OK, I did an installation in a virtual machine using the Ubuntu desktop CD with
the graphical installer in Swedish.
The desktop comes up fine and translated in Swedish. See attached screenshot.

The font is not to be meant to be used as default font for the desktop. If
fontconfig chooses this font over others, I suggest to add some fontconfig
rules to the font pac

this bug happens there also? If it does, it's an upstream issue and
needs to be fixed there. If the upstream version works fine, I suggest
to look into the Ubuntu patches which have been applied to
