Yes, my usb key it's a generic pen drive, and I experienced the same problem
both with my laptop and with other two desktop.
The OS is always Ubuntu 8.04.

I have a problem similar to that. The diference is: I'm using a laptop
SempToshiba, Kubuntu version, upgraded from Karmic and there is no
bootsplash on startup. The symptons are the same. But when I reboot with
the kernel of 9.10 version the system works nicely.

I tried to change the configuration file of libreoffice as suggested and
something is changed, now it appears a message saying something like
"Libreoffice need JRE to run" and offers me the button to start it, but
when I try to start it nothing happens and the same message comes back.

Like I said is an Italian message and it asks to re-enable the JRE,

your idea was right.
1) Using the kernel 4.18 the noise disappeared
2) crackling was from the headphones
3) Over-Amplification is (and was) disabled

Hi. I have this problem too on T440s with 18.04 (kernel 4.15.0-22). The
