i discovered that killing krunner after startkde has been executed fixes the
problems
this is a stupid hack, but it does the job - if you don't rely on krunner to
start your programs
starting it again makes the screen flashes re-appear.

work on Dapper, an upgrade of rhythmbox-applet is needed.

Hmm, I reconfigured it now so I cannot recover what it contained after

But afaik the problem is not /etc/network/interfaces but the different
network locations that can be saved in the network settings window. I do
