bootloader for it.
sda3 was a partition being formatted to be a new 17.10 installation,

I had the drive plugged on a 16.04, and at some point i noticed it went standby
(led blinking intermittently).

I have no idea which kernel versions Ubuntu uses in its releases, but
the recurring Hardware Error bug should be fixed in the 4.14 kernel. At
least I think it should -- nobody has reported on whether the fix

Actually i noticed the polling by looking at dmesg. I suspected that the errors
in my distribution's kernel (4.4.0 in 16.04) were somehow related to a kernel
polling process with a default of 10 minutes.

Might be specific issue with certain fonts. I have seen it on certain
websites, but not all.

When gnome-disk-utility formats a disk it assigns a new UUID.
UUID is the preferred way to identify disks in fstab.
Problem is that gnome-disk-utility does *not* update fstab.
As a consequence the system will not boot & newbies will be stumped. (I was
for two days).
Therefor

One of the lines in fstab specified an incorrect UUID and the system would not
boot.
The problem was that boot reported the disk *after* the incorrectly specified
disk.
The relevant lines in fstab were as follows
# /usr/local was on /dev/sdb1 during installation
