affect at least three separate applications using Python-Qt4.
While the packages for these applications could be separately fixed,
downgrading or otherwise fixing the Python-Qt4 package would fix the
issue for all the applications
What I meant was that it was not worth working on autodetection using cups,
when the method had changed to avahi.
I do not know if the avahi autodetection works for everyone, though I have not

I am unable to print after a smooth upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10, as the
cupsd service would not start. The installed version of cups-daemon is
2.2.0-2. I am using Ubuntu release 16.10.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
removing quiet splash and leaving GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" like that.

Thunderbird down. killall reports that thunderbird is not running.
Rebooting does not take the problem away. It is still there when I try
