I was able to uninstall the driver by first stopping lightdm with "sudo
systemctl stop lightdm". After reverting back to Nouveau I was able to
log in, but Unity didn't start. (no window borders or launcher, etc.) I
fixed this by doing the following:
sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
sudo setsid uni
Sorry, I just made the same mistake as you did and forgot --fail option.
There is no guarantee about return code if --fail is missing, RTFM!

the broken package is to first stop your X display manager, then use

I have the exact same bug. Using Linux Mint 17.3 (based on Ubuntu

Happening here on Rhythmbox 3.0.2 and Ubuntu 14.04. Packages have been
kept up to date via `apt-get update/upgrade` procedures.
I've installed a PulseAudio Equalizer and set echo cancellation module
on to (try) fix my noisy microphone, but no other "audio mods" are used.
Enabling track crossfade
This is not a bug, it is a configuration issue. It can be closed.
