A proper workaround is to install grub-i386 in on directory and grub- efi-x86_64 in another. Then in each respective grub.cfg, put configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfg along with a variable indicating what type it is. You also need to update your /etc/grub.d files to detect what grub modules are needed.
