I had the same issue on Ubuntu 14.04 and none of proposed workarounds
helped.
The way I was able to solve it was by manually restarting NetworkManager:
1) open terminal
2) type in: sudo stop network-manager
3) type in: sudo NetworkManager
And that is it! Afterwards I was able to normally connect t
Still no success - one computer is now as good as a brick! RAID is
turned off, but now everytime I try and install 14.04, I get a Grub
error at the end of the installation, and I cannot boot into the
installation.

Hum, you can just create the file with the expected value:
echo MODE=cron > /etc/default/fusioninventory-agent
For the record according to the Debian policy, those /etc/default/*
files must me optional.
