I can confirm the issue and it happened straight after upgrading to gvfs
(and I quote from the changelog: "* New upstream bug fix release.").

What I expected to happen:
If you set your Ubuntu to ask for password before the system start, of course
you will be able to choose a user, if this user is selected you can type the
password and then click on symbol that looks like ">" or pressing the Enter
key, after that
FWIW, this is still an issue in Ubuntu 13.04 (and Lubuntu 13.04).
Unfortunately the laptop in question recently stopped booting up and
I've not had a chance to get it fixed (if possible)...so I can't test
the most recent build.
