Based on my meager comprehension of syslog traces, it looks to me like
this is a problem with fglrx. I found somebody at the arch forums with
the same problem, seems to be upstream with amd. I will see if rolling
back to a former kernel will work, and if that doe4sn't work I will try

I can confirm the problem for Ubuntu 13.04. The problem is that the
"ghostscript" package does not contain pdfopt, but just its manpage. I
think, something went wrong with the packaging:
$ apt-file search pdfopt
ghostscript: /usr/share/man/de/man1/pdfopt.1.gz
ghostscript: /usr/share/man/man1/pdfop
