@Kieran, perhaps your BIOS is incorrectly set to indicate that the
floppy drive is present when there is no physical floppy drive present?
Often an incorrectly set BIOS can cause this problem.
If not, other things to try are to defragment NTFS and FAT file systems.

I can add the AMD Firestream 9250 to the list of affected video cards -
just upgraded and I've got the same problems as everyone else in this

Yes, according to the CCSM settings it's actually Ctrl+Alt+KP0 so you
need a keypad. And it does work.
This is a bug in itself because design /thought/ they had eliminated all
shortcuts that use the keypad, but obviously not. See bug 966099.
