It's possible that the old 8-in-1 media card reader can't handle high-capacity SD cards. It works okay with the low capacity 2-GB card but not the 8-GB SDHC card. However it wouldn't hurt to get more information. You should post a usbmon trace showing what happens when the 8-GB card is inserted.
