I am using Unity at the moment, but I have experienced similar issues in
the past in gnome. I will try unity2D and the gnome sessions (again) to
see if I can reproduce the bug there as well.
Looking at the sytem monitor no process is taking much CPU (Intel
I7-2600) at the moment. Compiz is using
I tested the -intel and mesa packages from comment #12 on a i5-3470s
machine. The artifact issue is fixed.

I am using evolution with Exchange server through evolution-mapi plugin.

The problem is fixed upstream in Ghostscript 9.06 which we will ship in
Quantal. For Precise we will have to make an SRU (Stable Release Update)
with the patch of the upstream bug applied. It will take some days as we
are in SRU freeze for the 12.04.1 release.
