I am now using the nvidia driver again because the PC gets very hot when using the nouveau driver (power management is not implemented so it always runs at 100%). It appears that the shutdown issue is only present in version 295.49 of the nvidia driver. Version 173.14.35 is working but has other issues regarding resume from suspend and changing from console to X (ctrl-alt-f7).
