Yes Leann and Bryan, I can boot with "elevator=deadline" and that is
exactly what I did after I noticed that CFQ was being used. But this
remains a bug that should be solved. Most people don't even know what a
scheduler is, or how to change it. On a server it is almost always a bad
idea to use CFQ.

I fixed it by uninstalling ubuntuone-client and dependants using
Synaptic Package Manager. Ubuntu One was just bloatware that I never
asked for anyway. It should be optional to download, especially when it
is buggy and causes hard-to-track problems like this.

I have nearly the same issue. A few weeks ago I fresh installed my computer and
set my own wallpaper with two monitors. I did also a fresh install on my
notebook and set my custom wallpaper but which worked fine. Just the computer
had the issue.

2. Check with xrandr to see what refresh rate it is telling compiz to use (in
the absence of sync-to-vblank):

If xrandr (hence the driver) is reporting the wrong refresh rate for your

I use NVIDIA 295.49, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on an Acer Aspire 5738ZG.
I'm suddenly unable to reproduce to problem entirely. Maybe because I'm
on battery power. (That's the only thing I changed).

Same as Frédéric Hoogstoel: a file with accent in its name will not
open. It will once I have removed the accent (like "réponse" ->
"reponse").
My installation is up to date.

I can indeed confirm that upgrading to AMD Catalyst 12.6 Beta fixed the
problem.
I build the .deb package from the install file using the internal build
process:
