I'm afraid I've been unable to reproduce this on my UEFI system. I did
an erase-whole-disk install and it just worked (with the exception of
some screen corruption at boot).
The only thing I can think of is that a UEFI GRUB core image is somehow
trying to find and load BIOS-platform GRUB modules,
No problem, i have also forgotten about it. Just tested it using Kubuntu
11.10 and it's ok, there is no bug any more.

My system is fully updated. Actually I've just noticed that sleep is
broken as well (it hangs instead of going to sleep), but I have no idea
if it's my fault or system's. I've installed 11.10 just few days ago,
updated it, and then after day or two upgraded to 12.04 Beta. Since then
problems starte
Quick update: I've just run my Ubuntu using 3.0 kernel from 11.10, which
wasn't deleted after installation, and magically both sleep and hotkeys
work.
Small summary:
11.10 (3.0 kernel) - both sleep and hotkeys work
12.04 (3.0 kernel) - both sleep and hotkeys work
12.04 (3.2 kernel) - no sleep, no

To answer your questions:
1. I don't know. I'm not a Linux/Ubuntu guru and (at
64) don't have the inclination to become one.
2. As far as I know, the only route back to 10.04.4 LTS
is to do a re-install from CD.
I let 10.04 install in a new partition (so I had XP, 11.10,
and 10.
