what error is displayed? please copy&paste the exact text and maybe a
screenshot.
could you provide a list of installed packages from both machines to check if
they are really the same in this regard:

Just upgraded to 12.04 the other day. The upgrade froze halfway through,
and i had to use recovery mode to restart the package manager, which to
my knowledge seemed to finish the upgrade (although it was in text mode
only), but i''m not sure if it did the clean-up routine at the end since
it was in
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Scan.
In /etc/sane.d/dll.conf try commenting out epson2 and use epson instead.
Try scanning as root.

A quick experiment suggests that the problem is partly related to the
font used, as not all fonts suffer from the problem.
Note that all the fonts (I have tried so far) do kern correctly in the
design view, it is the displayed slide show where kerning fails for some
fonts.
