Step 2: type Alt-F2 (or fn-alt-F2 on a Mac)
Step 3: type "killall nautilus" (without the ") and press enter (you will now
be able to see windows, but don't open any nautilus windows)

I think I solved the issue. My main memory was broken. The issue occured
only if large amounts of memory are allocated. I marked the Bug as

BTW, my NVIDIA card is Geforce 8600 GT.
Tried removing the proprietary driver to no avail.
Noticed that the live CD does not have an /etc/X11/xonf.conf file so I
did:
cd /etc/X11
mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.bak
restarted and no difference.
I have attached the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that was working
Is it possible to back port that fix to Natty? Many people are reporting
this problem (it manifests as bullets being shown as infinity symbols in
Evince, for instance), without realising the underlying problem, so it
would be good to fix it for them (without forcing everybody to upgrade
to Oneiric)

I can assure that the patch works but the the checkgmail notifier isn't
visible which might be due to unsatisfied dependencies which also
include libgtk2.
The following error is obtained:
Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",
at /usr/lib/perl5/Gtk2.pm line 138.
Every event that turns off the screen's backlight lets the system
unaccessible, even the energy saving ...

For me clean install of Kubuntu 11.10 64b fixed this problem. I have
NVidia GeForce480 GS in Dell Precision T5500 and the boot process now
displays the full resolution (as far as I can tell) Kubuntu logo and
asks for pasword for encrypted discs with nice graphic prompt.

Actually sorry, the computer where the problem is fixed was an upgrade
from 11.04, not a clean install. In either case it improved since in
11.04. In 11.04 the logo wasn't grahics, just text mode and the password
prompt was in a text mode as well. Now it is all graphic. The fix I have
applied in 11
Hardware accelerated on Linux is already there - using cairo on top of
xrender - which can be accelerated by hardware if the 2d driver supports
it.
