I can confirm that this problem is still present in Ubuntu 11.10.
Except this time it's the _grid_ that gets cut-off.
In addition, the menu now appears to work when the app is F11'd, but the
close/mini/maxi buttons disappear. And alt-tabbing out while this is
happening results in all other window

I can't understand your logic.
In nearly every single system I've seen it's up to the application itself to
prevent multiple instances or handle them correctly (e.g. open a new tab)
You can already open a new instance of the application by just selecting it in
the Dash again or using the shortcut
I would say it is a security problem to have any users show up at all.
There doesn't even seem to be an option to *always* hide *all* users.

options. Resume problem persists.

It seems that booting with linux_gfx_mode=text isn't working, while
booting with linux_gfx_mode=1024x768 is working. Somehow booting with
mode text seems to be default for my system, maybe because the graphics
card is blacklisted?

I have a solution that i've tested before.
My problem was that the touchpad didn't work on start up, but only on
log in. In the Xorg's log the SynPS/2 was recognised, but i suppose
there may be a link problem with the driver, so i've adjusted the xorg
configuration.

sispmctl version bump to 3.0

Telling the OS to disable screen savers seems dangerous because it is
unlikely to revert if Firefox crashes while viewing the video.
I think maybe we should just send a dummy keystroke every ~55 seconds
(with 1 minute being the lowest screensaver time limit). If we crashed
while viewing the video
