The shell script error can be seen in the first attachment, ".xsession-
errors.old", which is the log for the failed login. It's not present in
the success case (second attachment, called ".xsession-errors").

So far so good after 3 days running oneiric 3.0 kernel on lucid. I
presume a fix did went in between 2.6.38 and 3.0.0.
Hoping this will last.
I looked in the git web repository to find the most appropriate patch... My 2

Now the grid lines that distinguishes the boxes is almost the same as the lines

I've got the same exact problem, using an encrypted home partition. This
didn't happen at all when not using encryption.
Output of 'swapon -s':

closing the bug then, the ubuntuone bug leaded to conflicts with other
nautilus gconf users you can reinstall those you need with the updated
version
