AMD Phenom 8650, Nvidia 260, upgraded from 10.10 32-bit to 11.04 - also
affected. Every log out, reboot or shutdown ends with black screen. Only option

Same problem here (11.04 alternate on Sandy Bridge chipset).
/boot/grub/device.map doesn't exist
mkdevicemap creates a device.map, which contains the physical hard disks,

Me too. Installing 11.04 64-Bit solved my trouble with my notebook. I
had to activate propretary drivers and it worked like a charm.
Fixed in 11.04 I'd say.
