Turns out this last issue is because Ubuntu doesn't set the interface to auto
and dhcp in /etc/network/interfaces anymore. It must have been the case in the
past, because all of this originally worked without modifying the
aforementioned file. In any case, adding
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
It was reproducible when I filed, it was popping out every time an
application in the launcher had a notification. So that instead of the
just the icon wiggling and showing the whole launcher was unhiding. I
didn't have to do anything special, get a notification in pidgin it
would show up, get an
I've just tested the nvidia-173 driver instead of the 270 one, and I can
say unity is working now :)

the reinstall was just the notification bubble, but it did not actually
change the brightness. I had to add the EnableBrightnessControl option

I can confirm this is still a bug for the latest maverick.
The nohwcrypt option solves it for me.
