Ok, so here is what I did:
I booted the VM and waited until the ugly theme came up. I then ran the
above command and got the output above.
Maybe that means gnome-settings-daemon did not crash and it's a
different problem?
Or what else should I do?

This patch hardcodes building of libDSS.a to make build go further. From
what I see configure parts checks which version (shared or static) to
build but other parts assume that static one is provided anyway.

This is now working, after I installed today's daily build of Ubuntu
with Firefox 4.0. By default the Bookmarks Toolbar is off. To select go
to View-Toolbars and tick Bookmarks Toolbar. So this is now just a

Thanks. I think the module did not load at all, probably a version
mismatch. What does "cat /proc/version_signature" say? I can try to
recompile it again later. You can also try to load it manually using
"sudo insmod ..." (with X not running).

from the open-source b43 wireless driver to the closed-source one from
broadcom that Jockey offers. So this is definitely an issue within or
caused by the b43 wireless driver.

Same problem with Kile. Went to Settings > Configure Kile > Editor:
Open/Save > Advanced and changed the suffix of "Backup on save" from ~
to "BACKUPONSAVE".
That cured the problem for me. I mean it's a workaround, not a clean
solution. I'm also on Maverick and hoping that the bug will be released
