As I understand gksudo, it is in fact a wrapper for sudo. That is, it
always calls sudo regardless, and parses its output to determine if
password entry was successful. The source of this bug is that sudo
aborts with an error message that gksudo didn't expect.

Yes, there is another way: using the command ip from the net-tools package
instead of ifconfig. This package is installed by default in Ubuntu. Don't know
for other distributions.
Use it like this:
$ ip addr show
On my machine, it prints this:
$ ip addr show

It seems that this got fixed with (K)ubuntu 10.10. I put the UUID back
in fstab to try whether it was still broken, but now it does not seem to
give any problems anymore.
