Very odd. The first 10 or 12 letters on the line seem immune from this
behaviour, and moving the cursor backwards over the letter removes the
lines, but skipping to the front of the line and moving over the letters

Actually instead of fiddling with ldd, install all of the kdegraphics
packages under the umbrella that are compiled with the apt-sources.
Pretty sure gwenview is included in kdegraphics, see if you still get a
segfault with the recompiled version.

I also have another clean installation in a different hardware and there is no
message. Well one is Kubuntu64 another is Ubuntu32. Kubuntu64 is a desktop
computer no branded, but with good hardware components and NVIDIA restricted
drivers, Ubuntu32 is ASUS U5A laptop.

I can reproduce the behaviour mentioned by Reason (killing and restarting

When I do shutdown or reboot in user Gnome session, it waits a bit, user
is logged out, and I see GDM prompt. There, I have to choose shutdown or
reboot again in order to shutdown/reboot the computer.
I see it on two computers:
