Seems to work. I checked alsamixer, and the headphones option is still
"grayed out."
I adjusted the volume for the front speakers in alsamixer, and lost
audio in both headphones and speakers. Although, after a second reboot,
the headphones were working again. (Still grayed out in alsamixer
though.

Omer, thanks for your help.
I've tried rhythmbox from your ppa and the problem is still not solved.
Browsing the iPod with Nautilus displays the .mp3 extension, however
these are not copied onto the local drive.
I do not have the lame decoder package installed.
