Seems to work. I checked alsamixer, and the headphones option is still "grayed out."
I adjusted the volume for the front speakers in alsamixer, and lost audio in both headphones and speakers. Although, after a second reboot, the headphones were working again. (Still grayed out in alsamixer though.) I can adjust volume from the sound menu, as well as within applications and in the notification area without losing audio.
