All a bit of a mess. I've ended up, unconsciously, removing all the new
indicator/status applets and panels, and using replacements. One by one
they fell. I'm even back to Quod Libet to replace Rhythmbox whose
accessibility has been strangled by this change.
I regard this experiment as a failure.

I followed exactly jerry's instructions (post #6) in my Ubuntu 10.04
64bit system.
Unfortunatly the dpkg-buildpackage command, after a lot of successful
compilations, failed with the following last lines :

Aborted
parallels/vmware fusion/virtualbox runs them fine, so that can be an
alternative until this is fixed for native installation.

I don't think it is a duplicate. I've never had the crash occur while
browsing (though firefox is always open) and don't see a firefox core
dump or anything like that. I have intel hardware, not ATI. However, I
also cannot find a specific trigger, and it does look like it may be
caused by erroneous
Does this remain after a new kernel is installed? Or does this have to occur
after each upgrade?
