I can confirm this with a MacBook Pro 5,3. It was working fine in
Karmic, best I can remember.
The battery indicator does not show. If I select 'Always display an
icon' in the Power Management preferences, a 'plug' indicator appears
showing that I am charging even though I am running on battery.

The kernel isn't the problem source either. With the kernel
2.6.31-14-generic the sound output was perfect in Ubuntu 9.10, and now,
booting the same kernel but with the distribution upgraded to 10.04, the
sound is horrible.

With some luck I will be able to test a released 10.4 iso early next
week. If the problem persists I might have time test with the latest
