The updates in the ppa do not seem to fix the problem for me on VMware
7.0.1, host Ubuntu Lucid, guest Ubuntu Lucid. I still can't type my
password into the login box after restarting with the updates applied.

install package:
sudo apt-get remove --purge gnome-codec-install
Next time you start Rhythmbox - it shouldn't prompt you for any codecs.

I am still having this issue in a fresh install of the release candidate
of Ubuntu 10.04, using the default kernel. Both the root partition and
separate home partition are remounted readonly, so pretty much
everything is disabled (including the ability to save any log data).

OS prober insists on identifying one of my installations by /dev/sdXY
notation, even though it's told to use UUIDs.
All the rest of them are correctly identified by UUID.

I've marked the affected entry with <<--*This is the culprit.
It's an entry for Ubuntu 8.04.4 at the end of the OS prober entries.
The custom entry at the end is a workaround.
