I have WinXP wich can't boot even in safe mode. Disks was in RAW format.
I've converted then in qcow2 format. I'm lucky! WinXP boot now without
problems. All content is intact. Nothing is lost.

I went through the extensions and the last one installed was "Tweak
Network". After un-installing, the error disappeared. I re-installed the
extension and the problem has not recurred.

I think my problem was related with samba mounts, there was a reported
bug on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455122 about problems compiling
on samba mounted resources.
Solving that problem (mounting with "noserverino" option) seems to have

Since there were no updates available I had to manually set driver "vesa" in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.
The "Try to restore X"-utility of ubuntu didn't work - even starting with a
plain new config for my hardware didn't yield to a working X session.
