I expect to have the same audio settings before and after boot. So
resetting to some default values is not a good idea at all I think.

eventually was able to download everything.
Then the installation locked up. I rebooted, but the system was broken, so I
just installed from a 9.10 CD over my / partition.

How does this solve the bug? It's a workaround o
Just an update - this bug is still present in the released version of
Kubuntu 9.10 i386 (booted off a USB stick to make sure that user
settings are not affecting behavior). In my system, playback stops very
close to 5 minutes from starting.
Booting off a USB version of Ubuntu 9.10 i386 works fine
This is still the case with Karmic.

Same here on a Dell XPS m1330 with Wubi on Vista. Apparently there is no
activity but the systems does not halt.
When booting in recovery mode I can shutdown by typing: sudo shutdown -h
now. However, without the -h option, the system fails to stop.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that it's not always the second
attempt at connecting through NM that succeeds, it can be the third or
fourth attempt. I only tried a couple of times without updates from NM
PPA and can therefore not say for certain if it would have worked were I
more persistent.
Still the same problem in karmic.

I have been having this exact same problem since 8.04. I still have
this problem with Karmic after installing from scratch. I did not try
your fix above however.. its only happened to me once.. i always leave
my system on.. it happened to me this morning. Usually always after
about 8 or 9 hours
