Yes, I did mean xsplash, sorry. Anyway, this is fixed with latest
updates. gnome-panel appears over top of xsplash before it fades away,
which looks weird, but that's a separate problem.

Over the last couple of weeks I coached Alex to prepare the necessary
changes for fixing this bug. Last week, Giuseppe has made an upload to
Debian that obliviated the need to any particular Ubuntu changes.
Therefore, I suggest to merge 2.8.4-3 from Debian unstable to fix this
bug.

I also have a usb dongle with this chipset and it too won't connect
automatically with network manager, nor with dhcp. I have to give it an
ip address manually, then it work ok. Tested on Jaunty and Karmik beta
