Thanks. I'm relatively new to Debian based distros and haven't used

Me too... I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Karmic today... didn't test
if sound was working before updating but now anything I try to play in a
browser (Arora, Firefox) will fail i tried with the same .ogg file

I've tested your packet for a dozen of hours and I can now say that:
* flickering is almost gone (apart from those from the previous post, I've seen
no other flickering) for classic usage;
but
* flickering is much worse now using virtualbox (I use a windows xp with
virtualbox guest additions).

The "update -f" is supposed to fix broken dependencies. As far as
upgrading, you can use any tool you find more convenient (apt-get
upgrade, or simply the update-manager, or synaptic).
In any case, did the "sudo apt-get update -f" call fixed your issue?

The 'sudo apt-get update -f' did not fix the problem, but 'sudo apt-get
upgrade -f' did. I am guessing that this was because of a type
definition in the libc6 .deb.

Jan, Thanks for taking an interest.
OK, I am on Ubuntu 9.04 (which does not have this Gparted/printer
problem) with the printer disconnected, so plugged it in. There were
some messages about looking for driver and so on, I cancelled them. Then
ran dmesg and got this:

what are you trying to do? if you are working via ssh you only need
install openssh-server package to maintain remotely your machine. Have
you tried to do a basic test like run "ping" or "telnet" side to side?
