I am having a similar issue, but I am not sure if its the same as other

privilege granting window requires you to first select which 'admin'
user you actually want to use for this action. For an action that is so

I have a similar problem with an Intel 845G graphics chipset:
After ISOLINUX I see the bootsplash, but as soon as X11 starts screen
becomes black, except for the mousepoint. Mousepointer still moves, so
the machine and the server did not crash.
Please allow switching to console mode.
