I have too discovered this problem on both 8.10 & 9.04. I have not
found a fix for 8.10. I was able to fix 9.04 using the following
procedure:
1. Press the 'ESC' key during GRUB at start up.
2. Choose the "Recovery Mode" kernel option for your version of Ubuntu

from ext3 to ext4, based on the Ubuntu wiki, and now my file system is dead

I have had the same problem.
I am with Kubuntu 9.10 64 bits, and couldn't access wifi network "protected"
with WEP with an ASCII passfrase.
I tried what Aurélien Gâteau proposed, to translate the ascii password to
hexadecimal code, and it worked ok.
What he proposed to translate it:

That's one costly fall back mechanism. Reminds me of days when I was using
windows. Just make me laugh on that so called *fall back* mechanism.

According to the nvidia-settings application, my XPS M1330 idles at 40
Celsius. Even watching full screen video, it doesn't get significantly
hotter than this.

Asoundconf has been removed in karmic, in anticipation of the new GNOME
volume control + pulse being more useful, allowing users to more easily
control which sound card is used.
If you need asoundconf, I suggest you download a copy of alsa-utils from
jaunty, and extract asoundconf from that.
