Finally I managed to isolate the culprit. It was a single file, sitting
in my NFS-exported home folder. I don't know how it got there (it's an
email message), but the filename was a single character, in an unusual
encoding.
The file is shown by FreeBSD as a diamond with a question mark inside.

The problem occurs in 9.04 when I setup the backup-job though ssh. No
error-message, no error. The process just go zombie. SimpleBackup hangs.
Is there a log or something that I can send you to get you the clues you
need?

Thanks for your help George but this trick didn't work. I killed
wireless with hardware switch and put my stinkpad to sleep. I resumed it
after 10 minutes just to be greeted with GDM... Sigh
