Public bug reported:
After an inline upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04.1 x86 to Ubuntu 9.04 x86 sound stops
working on a Dell Precision 390.
Hardware details attached.
I was able to narrow the problem down to alsa.conf as installed by libasound2.
When I copy that file from the Live CD of 8.04.1 to the 9.

Thanks for your bugreport.
Please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* so that we can
diagnose what exactly its doing. But in general it tries to install
ubuntu-desktop (or kubuntu-desktop depending on your flavor) and
otherwise performs a normal dist-upgrade.

I am not sure that this upstream fix will help. It makes the udev scan
effectively dependant on whether there is a current profile reported by
the drive. The drive in the cases we have documented are reporting a
profile, indeed if they were not we would not be attempting the TOC read
and later.
By mistake, this is fixed in 1.9.7-7 which Debian has for quite a while
now.
