I can confirm this on Jaunty RC on HP nx6310 with Intel 945GM. Putting
Option "FramebufferCompression" "off" in my /etc/xorg.conf solved the
problem with casual Black/Grey/White Screen of Death on external monitor
AND the periodical filckering (or rather "shaking" in my case) mentioned

just aligns to a grid when clicked, but forces icons to persistently be

As a further data point, I built a custom 2.6.29.1 kernel (source from
kernel.org) using the /boot/config-2.6.28-11-generic file and "make
oldconfig".
This boots fine and doesn't show any issues with the file system.
Rebooting into the 2.6.28-11 kernel shipped with the 9.04 RC results in

confirming the winbind cause. I de-installed winbind, and that fixed the

As I suspect you're using my version of osd-notify, you should try "make
uninstall". As I didn't change the any makefiles this will work if it
worked for the original package.
But be aware that it might be a design decision not to be able to
uninstall this peace of software. In that case you could
I updated to Jaunty and now I have 180.44. I still have the problem. It
is very similar to this, but if this is already fixed then it must be
caused by a differend reason. But really it is very similar to this. The
description fits and Daniele's workaround makes it work temporarily.
