Sadly, this problem does not seem limited to the ata_piix driver. I just tried installing Intrepid to the CF card using the "all_generic_ide" boot parameter. I looked in syslog to verify that it was indeed using the generic ata driver. The install failed as usual somewhere around halfway through.
