Thanks Scott - it looks like it might be. Using a modified version of
the patch in freedesktop-bugs #19557 at least allows a correct (i.e.
using the EDID info) modeline to function. It still doesn't autodetect
correctly without the modeline though.

I re-enabled the blur plugin (gaussian and 4x4 bilinear) and it seems to *work*
in the sense that it blurs, and also under notify-osd.
The only problem is that it slows down other things, and also ti can cause xorg
usage to 50% in some situations that I haven't yet understood.

After having more trouble with the kernel which prevented me from
starting, the error disappeared after a system repair. I repaired the
installation via the chroot option from the alternate CD and ran a
reinstall, followed by dist-upgrade from there. This fixed it, so I
suppose there was something

Jacob: I believe that patch gives the ability to disable GEM in the drm module,
at load-time of the module. This way people who don't yet have stable GEM
support can disable it.
I have not tested the patch, but it seems like it may work. The same bug

I do not find any issue with gksu thunar opening any text file. A double
click on /etc/fstab opens fstab in Abiword; right-click allows me to
open it in mousepad. The same procedure for a text file in ~/home works.
