I just dug this report out because I am seeing the same symptoms in an
up to date 9.04. I'm using the onboard sound on my Asus P5B deluxe which
is apparently "AD AD1988B" according to google. Uses snd_hda_intel.

Only modprobe -r sky2
and modprobe sky2 could fix the problem.
Because the kern.log was bursting with information, I zipped the info,

off compiz to use it - that, too, needs to be fixed, since you can't
reasonably expect people to switch off compositing when the very
graphics primitives that make compositing possible would also be of use
in scaling pixmaps...
