Are you sure this is not a hardware problem? It could be the keyboard

here are the answers
1- I did not. I installed directly Ubuntu 8.10
2- I din not add any.
3- I have not tried it. But I did as db said and it works. I changed grub list.
I typed "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" and then removed "splash" and
"quiet" entries then I restarted
