I am not sure but this could also be because the CPU was too hot (due to a
buggy BIOS) and so it was unstable in general. I don't understand though why
windows was stable. Anyway, today I updated the BIOS to another one and now the
CPU temperature seems to be okay. And so far no crashes...

Thanks. So the patch works fine and adds the quirk, and this works with
radeon.
But there seems to be a bug in radeonhd that it does not apply any
quirks.
And DisplaySize does not work. Another bug or a new feature.
Finally, when there's no DDC:

failsafe and install e16. Then exit failsafe and login with e16-kde.
This then allowed me to start systemsettings>Desktop>Advanced and
uncheck "Enable direct rendering". Then apply and log out. Then log

The easiest/fastest way I found to get the system back workable with Kubuntu is:
- Try to log in
- ctrl-alt-f1 to a console when the login hangs
- kill -9 kwin or compiz.real (depending on which you use)
- Alt-F7 back to the GUI
- Use the cashew to add the Konsole Profiles plasmoid to the desk

Looking through the terminal log, mumble-server was not installed during that
installation run, it was only attempted configured, since it failed it's
configuration the first time.
Could you see if you can find the log from the initial installation?

Now the font size of menus and lists is unbelievably tiny and unreadable
in Thunar, Amarok, System Monitor, although it remains sensible in
Firefox. Note the resolution of this screenshot - 1280x768. As it turns
out it's on a 9 inch screen so it's even more of a joke than it would
normally be.
