If there is no driver loaded, it has nothing to do with the mixer. I
don't know if alsamixer will even run in that case.
The thing to try first would be to manually run "sudo modprobe
snd-hda-intel" and see if it'll even let the driver load at all.

Well, it seems that this is an upstream problem that has been resolved

I would still prefer if this was fixed, therefore if you would, can you

I had to install Kubuntu Hardy (I do need KDE3, not 4) and the HAL/automount is
not working since the beginning.
A full upgrade lead me to KDE 3.5.10 and still not automount.
My problem is with USB HDD, not floppy, though.
